Well pump replacement: when repair is no longer enough
Many pumps can be repaired, but some jobs are really replacements. Knowing the difference helps you judge a quote.
- Replace when the motor has burned out, the pump is worn and cycling constantly, flow has dropped steadily over years, or the pump is well past a typical service life.
- Repair when the problem is a switch, capacitor, control box, check valve, or a short section of pipe or wire.
A replacement usually means pulling the pump on its drop pipe, inspecting the pipe, wire, and torque arrestor, and setting a new unit at the right depth. Sizing matters: horsepower and flow should match well depth, static water level, and household demand. A pump that is too big can short-cycle or stress the well. Many crews also check the pressure tank and pitless adapter while the well is open, and it is a sensible time to replace aging wire or pipe.
Ask whether a quote includes the pump, motor, pipe and wire changes, and any warranty on parts and labor.
What it costs
Price is driven by pump type (jet or submersible), horsepower, well depth, how much drop pipe and wire must be replaced, and whether the tank or controls are replaced too. Get a written quote that lists parts separately from labor.

FAQ
- How long does a well pump last?
- It varies with water quality, cycling, and sizing. Many last well over a decade, but a pump that is failing repeatedly is often cheaper to replace.
- Can I switch from a jet pump to a submersible?
- Often yes, depending on well diameter and depth. A provider can assess the well and advise.
- Will replacement take all day?
- Many are done in a day, but deep wells or problems found in the pipe can extend the job.
